About

Sikh Heritage Month (SHM) was first passed into law in Ontario in 2013 and has since been officially adopted by other provinces across Canada. In 2019, the Canadian federal government became the first country in the world to designate April as Sikh Heritage Month with the Sikh Heritage Month Act.

Over the past five years, we have proudly hosted a variety of community-wide events every April and have always been happy to bring the Sikh community of Ottawa closer together. In 2016, the Nishan Sahib was raised in the nation’s capital marking the start of the first official SHM in Ottawa. That year, we celebrated with traditional music, art, food, and so much more! In the following years, we expanded on our festivities of 2016 and continued to joyously celebrate our culture and religion. Each year we plan activities ranging from networking events to galas and motivational talks.

SHM is a momentous time that is meant to be enjoyed by anyone who chooses to. If you wish to learn more about it, we would love to have you attend our events and participate in the activities that we’ve planned.

Our Mission

Our Mission

The goal of SHM is to provide an opportunity of members of the Sikh community in Ottawa and abroad to have a way to connect with Sikh history, art, culture and music.

Our Vision

Each year we look to inspire Sikhs around the world through our displays of Sikh art, keynote speakers and various historical presentations. It is through this that we hope to spread the message of the Sikh Guru's and to inspire the next generation of Sikh youth.
