 Where history was made.

Celebrating the 325th anniversary of the Khalsa and Vaisakhi

The Sikh Heritage Month Ottawa Committee was established to empower Sikh youth by providing them with leadership opportunities while promoting knowledge, understanding, and preservation of the history, culture, and religious life of Sikhs in Canada.

In 2013, history was made with April proclaimed as Sikh Heritage Month (SHM) by the Legislative Assembly of Ontario (Bill 52). The first of its kind in the world, Sikh Heritage Month is a celebration of arts, culture and heritage.

Sikh Heritage Month Ottawa made history in 2016 with the raising of the Nishaan Sahib (Sikh flag) in front of Ottawa City Hall. This represented the first time in over 300 years that the Nishaan Sahib was raised in front of a government building in the world.

Sikh Heritage Month Ottawa features dozens of events each year which include the work of local and international artists. Every year, SHM Ottawa brings communities together to celebrate Sikh art, heritage and culture.

SHM Ottawa's flagship event brings together Sikhs from around the world for a night of speeches, food and music. This event acts as a mouthpiece for Sikhs from around the world to inspire everyone.

"The story of the Sikh community in Canada is, in fact, just the story of Canada.”
Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau
