Sikh Heritage Month Guided Tour of the Ottawa Sikh Society Gurdwara (Place of Worship) for OCDSB staff

This open house will be a wonderful opportunity to learn more about the Sikh faith, practices, and heritage as well as the long history of Sikhs in Canada. There will be an opportunity to discuss resources available for educators and other important information to support Sikh students in your schools.


Program Details

  • Assemble in the Main Prayer Hall

  • Presentation on Sikhism

  • Kirtan (Sikh hymns) and Ardas (Sikh prayer)

  • Tour of Gurdwara

  • Presentation of “Sikhs in Canada Timeline” Exhibition

  • Discussion on resources OSS can provide to support OCDSB schools

  • Vegetarian snacks and refreshments in the Langar Hall

Dress Code There is no special dress code inside a Gurdwara (temple). Traditionally, everyone sits on carpeted floors in the Main Prayer Hall for congregation and in the Langar Hall for eating. Please wear clothes suitable for floor sitting. A limited number of ottomans in the Prayer Hall and chairs in the Langar Hall are available for the elderly and for accessibility needs.

Head Covering You will be required to cover your head while inside the Gurdwara. Scarves and bandanas are available on site for covering your head or you may bring your own.

Footwear Foot wear is removed and kept in the cloakroom before entering the prayer hall and indoors.
