Events

Sikh Heritage Month Ottawa started in 2015 with a multi-day event at Ottawa City Hall where for the first in over 300 years, the Nishan Sahib was raised in front of a government building. From this sprung a tradition that has continued ever since.

Each year the SHM Ottawa team adds more and more events as we strive to make SHM Ottawa more inclusive and an educational experience for all. In 2016, we launched out flagship Tegh Talk Gala, a glamorous evening with international speakers, live classical music, beautiful art and amazing food.

This year the theme of our events will be "Himmat" or "Courage" to celebrate the success of Sikhs everywhere in the face of adversity. Our events throughout the month will relate back to this central theme. Stay tuned as we reveal our events.

This year we are bringing you two amazing events. The first is a 1-on-1 conversation with Sikh Basketball player Bikramjeet Singh Gill. Our second event is our annual Tegh Talks Gala. This event showcases 4 inspirational speakers from around the world and this year we are happy to announce that our speakers include:

  • Lt. Colonel Dr. Kamal Singh Kalsi - The first Sikh to be allowed to wear a turban in the US army

  • Dr. Baljit Singh - Vice-President Research at the University of Saskatchewan and the previous dean of veterinary medicine at the University of Calgary

  • Dr. Harjeet Singh Grewal - Professor at the University of Calgary and instrumental figure in the creation of Canada's first Sikh Studies program at the University of Calgary
